I read this wonderful book almost a year ago, after I heard that it won a prestigious prize in Italy. The novel's main character is Anna Alrutz: she herself, not a body any longer but a wandering ghost, is telling us the story, going back and forward with the most important moments of her existence. Anna lived in the first part of the past century in Germany, and died before the second world war. She narrates about her childhood in her wealthy and open minded family, her first and secret love, her obstinate decision - against the family's will - to become a Braune Schwester (the nurses created by the Führer, who were specialised in sterilising the unwanted people) in order to give a contribution in the new national socialist society. But she recalls also the moment when she realized that something inside her is changing, and started to doubt about her dreadful actions, making her last attempt to live in a different way...The novel is brilliantly written, with an accurate reconstruction of historical facts, with the great quality of a well woven plot and above all with the superb ability of investigating a human soul.
A book that I highly recommend.
