When best buddies Michael and Gabriel come across the scene of a car crash, they argue about pulling over to help. But when they see a shattered car, a bullet hole, and a man on the verge of death, they have no choice but to take him to hospital. A simple enough act, but neither of them could guess what would happen next…
Daniel Harris is a young attorney, and when Michael and Gabriel save him from the side of the road, his whole life changes. Who would want to kill him? And did it have anything to do with another attempted murder, on the same night but on the other side of town?
As the police conduct their investigation, the worlds of these three people get turned upside down, and when Michael and Gabriel are arrested on suspicion of both the murder across town and Daniel’s attempted murder, it’s clear that not everything is as it seems. Despite the potential danger, Daniel vows to find the real killer so he can free the men who saved his life.
Of course, nothing is ever that easy. Add in a whole host of evidence which points in several different, confusing directions, a wealthy yet enigmatic businessman, and a mysterious cult called ‘Angels’, and Daniel has more than enough to deal with. Risking life and limb, he must now wade through all of the evidence to get to the truth about the killer, and about his whole town.
Can Daniel get to the bottom of this strange, tangled web of lies? Can he convince the judge and jury of the real murderer’s motives? And, most importantly, can he do all of this before time runs out – both for his friends behind bars and for himself?
‘Angels’ takes a traditional whodunit murder mystery and adds in conspiracy theories and secret orders, along with a hearty dose of courtroom drama, to create something truly unique and intriguing. When your town is run by Angels, it’s hard to know which path leads to Heaven, and which path will take you to Hell.

"Angels" is a thrilling novel about cults, murder, police corruption and one man's efforts to see the men who saved him proved innocent of the crimes charged against them. James Kipling once again proves his talent for writing as he creates a spellbinding plot that weaves the foundation of a secret religious cult and the murders that are connected in a way that makes the reader eagerly inquisitive and ready to unravel the murder mystery right along with Daniel. The novel has a well-written feel with a fast-paced plot, memorable characters, a chilling dark fantasy tone and a deeply satisfying ending. From the police corruption that underlies the bigger plot to the strangely mysterious Angels cult which seems to be pulling the strings of all those around, "Angels" kept me sucked into the novel from the very first page until the last.

Angels edition by James Kipling Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a great murder mystery book for those who love a good thriller/whodunit novel.
The plot draws you in immediately, since the author starts the novel as close to the ending as possible; even when the characters are just collecting evidence, there is an element of suspense in the underlying tone. As you follow Daniel, a man who was shot because he was wearing the wrong outfit at the wrong time, and his mission to clear his saviors, Gabriel and Michael, from the charge of murder, the plot thickens as conspiracies arise, with racial supremacist cults, and the one thing that connects these three men together.
The characters are interesting, and you can get a feel for Daniel's character as the author develops him over time, and the antagonist is also well established, but sometimes I got a bit lost as to which speaker was Gabriel and which was Michael when I didn't pay attention to dialogue tags. However, these characters play more of a supporting role after the first few chapters; the character that was clearly most focused on was Daniel, and it does show, as he is a complex and dynamic character.
I particularly liked the use of names in this book, since usually writers don't choose specific names for significance, but Kipling manages to add a lot of depth to some characters just by their name. For instance, in this Angels series, Gabriel and Michael are names of actual angels of lore, immediately telling the reader that they are the good guys. And Daniel, which means "God is my judge", is a lawyer, and an ethical one at that, which makes perfect sense if you know the meaning of that name.
The writing is, unfortunately, a tad weak. I would have loved to read more descriptive prose, to get a feel for the places visited in the book, or for the writing to become snappy. Kipling does a pretty good job with dialogue, and since this is a very 'talky' novel I feel that compensates for a lot, but ultimately the prose is weaker than the plot or characters, which may turn people away.
However, this is still one of the best thriller books I've read in a while, and I think that the plot can certainly stand on its own.
The author, James Kipling, prefaces the book Angels by stating that it is "neither about conspiracy theories, nor about mystical beings. It is a story unbound by time and location...A story about real people". And so it is...
Yes Angels is overflowing with mafia crimes, drama and suspense, but it goes deeper and bigger than that...it is indeed a story unbound by time and location; it is a social commentary on
* The extent of our responsibility as citizens when faced with criminal elements. "we are not against rituals and worship. It is when these are used to cover criminal activities...it is then, only then, we speak up"
* Hate crimes against humanity that is larger than life. It is a blend of Hitler and the likes of Jim Jones where discrimination against race is merged with one person having control over the minds of thousands of people to create his own army for criminal activities. "Even though this group...was guilty of crimes against humanity, there were victims inside the group as well. Young men were being fed with hate and false dreams of racial supremacy to the point where they'd go ahead and kill another human being."
It is essentially a story about the intellectual battle between a young lawyer and the corrupt, criminal mind of a delusional powerhouse who `robbed hundreds of young men from their power to think". As a result, the reader is caught in this battle and oftentimes doesn't know who to trust and is always second guessing the characters as well him/herself.
Kipling cleverly presents the above themes through layers and Layers of plots, subplots, symbolisms and other literary devices. Biblical connotations are at the forefront. From the title `Angels' which, as the name of a cult, speaks volumes as to the depth of corruption that pervades the book; to the Biblical names of most of the characters which hint at their personality traits - Daniel, Gabriel, Jonah and Judas to name a few.
Kipling has an excellent knack of strategically posing questions or situations that beg questions right at the end of a chapter so that the reader finds it hard to put the book down! "Daniel needed help and there was only one place to go".
This book ends with a message for the world community...and it's one of freedom.
A good mafia thriller filled with conspiracies.
Highly recommended reading!
